Canada’s relationship with Britain changed dramatically from 1914 to 1939 leading to the independent Canada we have today. When the Britain Empire went to war on 1914, so did Canada, Canadians had no say as to whether or not they wanted to go to war. Canada signed the treaty of Versailles and joined the new League of Nations. Canada did not need to sign the treaty but it did anyways because of the great contributions Canada made in the war. World

When Britain declared war on Germany in 1914, Canada being part of the British Empire also went to war. Canada had no choice in the matter. “Britain's declaration of war in 1914 meant that Canada, as a part of the British Empire, was automatically at war, Canadians could have chosen to do very little. It was up to us how much we participated. We chose instead to do a great deal.” (Junior Canadian Encyclopedia, 2002) Canada made great contributions to the war even though we were forced to join the war. “Canada was united behind the decision of Borden's government to give full support to Britain and to dispatch a CANADIAN EXPEDITIONARY FORCE. There was now a stronger argument than ever before for a Canadian "voice" in the making of policy; but British Prime Minister H.H. Asquith still had nothing to offer.” (Canadian Encyclopedia, 2002)

To end the war the treaty of Versailles was made. All large countries that were involved in the war had to sign it for the war to end. This included America, France, Britain and Germany. Other countries could sign the treaty but it was not required. “Canada signed the Treaty of VERSAILLES and became a member of the LEAGUE OF NATIONS, whose covenant was part of the treaty. Thus the country acquired a new international status, won by its soldiers on the battlefield and confirmed by its statesmen's pertinacity at the conference table.” (Canadian Encyclopedia, 2002). The League of Nations is the start of the United Nations we have today and its good to know that Canada was one of the members, it made Canada more of a global power than just a extension of the British empire.
